We serve some of the most dynamic, ethnically and culturally diverse communities in the State of California. Our programs are designed to promote services to ensure that individuals and families will be safe, self sufficient, healthy, out of trouble at home, in school or at work. We focus on providing temporary and supportive services to individuals and families in need, while assisting them to achieve their goal of financial self-reliance.

In addition, we administer and oversee services for seniors, dependent adults and people with disabilities. The Adult Protective Services (APS) Program investigates incidents of elder and dependent adult abuse while the In Home Supportive Services (IHSS) Program provides assistance to those eligible aged (65 and over), blind and disabled individuals who are unable to remain safely in their own homes without this assistance.

We have over 1,500 staff in various locations throughout Fresno County, and is continuing its efforts to provide regionally based services to better serve residents of small and remote communities. We have expanded our role in the community beyond the issuance of benefits, and are actively developing strategies to bring improved services to all areas of the County, partnering with other agencies to provide a comprehensive and holistic approach to client services, and improving the lives of children, families and the elderly.

Work services which include; continuing education, job skills training, counseling and supportive services. In addition, the DSS has over 6000 underemployed individuals with existing job skills and proven employ-ability who are looking to upgrade their position. We use current labor market information and work closely with the Fresno County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) to anticipate employer job skill needs and to design our training programs. The “Work First” philosophy of Welfare to Work, or CalWORKs, assures that anyone who wants to work will be given that opportunity, and our department is committed to assisting with employment barriers in overcoming them and joining the thousands who have left the welfare rolls.

Fresno County Economic Development Corporation (EDC)

The EDC is a nonprofit organization established to market Fresno County as the premier location to expand and grow core industries. We strive to not only facilitate site selection for new businesses within Fresno County, but we also assist in the retention and expansion of businesses that are already located in the area. Funded by both public and private investments, the EDC offers investors a wide range of benefits and services including business facilitation and advocacy, referrals through the EDC’s Business Expansion and Retention Program, known as the “BEAR Action Network,” and the opportunity to stay connected in the community through EDC events and publications. Our state-of-the-art website, and mobile website with electronically reported news and features, fosters partnerships and builds relationships among EDC investors, elected officials and community leaders.
