- After the initial 6 months, you will have the opportunity to apply for two extensions for additional training:
- Get 50% wage reimbursement for the next 27-39 weeks for the first extension and 25% wage reimbursement for the next 40-52 weeks for the second extension.
- Get a 40% tax credit on qualified first year wages up to $6,000 if the employee is retained for at least 400 hours (veterans and youth have different tax credit opportunities)
- You will be assigned a Business Retention Specialist for program and client support
Wage Reimbursement
For every hire, you’ll be reimbursed for the actual wages paid in accordance with the following:
- Get 100% wage reimbursement for the first 13 weeks you employ the worker
- Get 75% wage reimbursement for the next 14 – 26 weeks you employ the worker
- After the initial 6 months, you will have the opportunity to apply for two extensions for additional training:
- Get 50% wage reimbursement for the next 27-39 weeks for the first extension and 25% wage reimbursement for the next 40-52 weeks for the second extension.
On a case-by-case basis, employment placements and wage reimbursement may be considered for an extension. Extension requests shall be submitted to COUNTY’s DSS no later than thirty (30) days prior to the original subsidized employment end date.
Extensions are thirteen (13) weeks in duration and limited to a maximum of two (2) extensions for each participant.
Approval of extensions must contribute to the likelihood of either of the following criteria:
- The participant obtaining unsubsidized employment with the EMPLOYER; or
- The participant obtaining specific skills and experiences relevant for unsubsidized employment for a particular field.
Extensions are at the sole discretion of the COUNTY’s DSS Director or designee.
Work Opportunity Tax Credit
The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) program offers federal tax credits to employers as an incentive to hire people in several specific target groups. WOTC applies only to new employees.
The new employee must belong to one of the following nine target groups
- Temporary Assistance to Needy Families Recipient
- Veteran who is receiving CalFRESH (food stamps), or a Disabled Veteran with a 10 percent or higher disability
- Ex-Felon
- Designated Community Resident
- Vocational Rehabilitation referral
- A summer youth
- 18-39 year old CalFRESH (food stamps) recipient
- Supplemental Security Income recipient
- Long-term family assistance recipient
Get a 40% tax credit on qualified first year wages up to $6,000 (yielding a $2,400 max credit when all requirements are met) for employees retained at least 400 hours.
Get a 25% tax credit on qualified first year wages up to $6,000 ($1,500) for employees that retained at least 120 hours but less than 400 hours.
The qualified summer youth category is based on qualified first year wages up to $3,000 ($1,200 max credit) and qualified wages for disabled veterans only, was increased from $6,000 to $12,000 ($4,800 max credit).
The hiring of qualified long-term family assistance recipients provides for a tax credit of 40% on qualified first year wages up to $10,000 and 50 percent on second year qualified wages up to $10,000 for a total potential of $9,000 tax credit. This employee must be retained a minimum of 400 hours to receive the full tax credit.
